My presentation is on how to use a rotation board while teaching a guided reading lesson to a small group.  It seems that teachers are always trying to find a way to work with a small group and still have the rest of the class working on something meaningful and independently.  I found the centre rotation board to be a wonderful tool once I was able to properly manage it.

Outline of Presentation

·        As teachers come in there will be snacks and drinks available for them to take to their seats.

·        Have teachers sit so there is at least one person from each grade k-3 at each table.

·        Have the tables set up each with a different colour in the middle.

·        Introduction with Power Point Presentation (see link below) – Guided Reading Rotation Board (20 minutes)

·        Show a sample rotation board with colour groups that relate to the table colours

·        The teachers will have 10 minutes to spend at their table discussing different uses for the manipulatives in their station.

·        They will then rotate to a new station following the rotation board and brainstorm different ideas for uses at the second station for 10 minutes.

·        They will find a quiet area with their grade partners and share their ideas for the different centres. (15 minutes)

·        Provide handouts with rotation board icons and centre ideas.

·        Questions, concerns (5 minutes)

·        Be available for questions that come up in the future – once teachers have begun using the rotation boards in their classroom.

·        Use staff meeting Professional Learning Time for teams to reflect and modify their guided reading rotation board time in their classroom.

Set up

·        The presentation will take place in the library where there are many tables already set up.

·        The tables will each have a coloured piece of construction paper on it for identifying them as a group on the rotation board.

·        Each table will also have pens and papers

·        There will be food on the counter so that staff can get some food before they sit down at a table.

·        One long table will have bins with different icons and manipulatives that will be used during the hands on activity.
